About us
Welcome to our dynamic and passionate team, dedicated to cancer population screenings in the Caribbean Netherlands.
Together with our chain partners, we are committed to detecting cancer as early as possible, increasing the chances of a successful and often less invasive treatment.
Our story began in 2019 with the pilot breast cancer screening program in Bonaire, driven by just one person. After a temporary stop in March 2020, the breast cancer screening program on Bonaire was resumed in May 2021 on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS) to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). It is now possible to participate in both breast cancer and cervical cancer screening on all three islands. The start of colorectal cancer screening is expected in 2025.
On 5 October 2020, former State Secretary Paul Blokhuis ordered the introduction of population screening programs for cancer on Bonaire, Statia and Saba. In the European Netherlands, we have three cancer screening programs: breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer screening. RIVM's Centre for Population Screening organizes these population screenings in the Caribbean Netherlands. We do this in collaboration with Saba Cares and Public Health and Prevention Clinic and other Health Care Organizations on the islands.
